HOW TO SPEND ONE DAY IN ATHENS

I often get asked, ‘what would you do if you only had one day to see Athens’. This is usually because Athens is considered a stop-over on your way to the Greek islands.

As I’ve said before – I absolutely loved Athens and always recommend visiting Athens as there is so much culture and history to experience in this beautiful city.

I spent one month travelling Athens, and here is what I would prioritise if I only had one day to see Athens:

Morning

Visit the Acropolis & Areopagus Hill

The Acropolis is one of the most important historical sites in the western world and should definitely be on your list if you can afford the tickets. Acropolis tickets and deals can be found here.

The Acropolis opens at 08h00 every morning.

If you don’t want to spend money on visiting the Acropolis, this hill allows you to get pretty close to the Acropolis and see a great view of Athens city below.

Afternoon

On your way down from the Acropolis, you’ll walk into the neighbourhood of Plaka – the ‘Oldest Neighbourhood in Europe – Neighbourhood of the Gods’.

Explore the charming streets of Plaka and have some lunch at one of the traditional tavernas.

During your time here make sure you find Tripodon Street – the oldest street in Europe.

After Plaka, walk over (or catch the bus) to Syntagma Square, where you will find the Hellenic Parliament Building, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Royal Gardens.

When you are done exploring Syntagma – take a walk down the famous Ermou Street, which is the shopping street of Athens, down to Monastiraki Square.

Late Afternoon

Explore Monastiraki Square and the Monastiraki Flea Markets

This was my favourite spot in Athens!

Take note of all the incredible history surrounding you such as Hydrian’s Library, the old Tzistarakis Mosque, and the view of the Acropolis up on the hill.

Sunset

Find a rooftop bar in Monastiraki Square for an incredible view of the Acropolis at sunset.

Watch how the Acropolis goes from yellow to gold and purple. and then lights up at night!

Evening

Either have dinner on one of the rooftop restaurants with the view of the Acropolis, or join the vibrant streets below.

Sample traditional Greek cuisine such as Moussaka, Souvlaki, Dolmades, Baklava and many more.

Or if you are on a budget and still have energy – find a gyros to-go while you walk the streets at night

(You never get tired of 4 Euro Gyros).

After dinner explore the streets at night as it brings a whole new energy and experience.

Make sure to always look up to see the beautiful Acropolis at night.

Late Night

If you have the energy and want to experience some great artwork and bars – head to Psirri for a great city nightlife atmosphere.

I hope you have an incredible experience in Athens – it was one of my favourite destinations while travelling Greece. If you would like to know more details about travelling in Athens (such as main neighbourhoods, attractions and transport options) – visit my travel guide here.
